Taste Cannot Be Prompted: Why AI Will Not Replace Creative Judgment
AI collapsed the tool advantage. It cannot replace taste. Here is why creative judgment is the only moat left, drawn from Apple's own design principles.
Everyone is scared of AI.
Scared it takes the work.
Scared it flattens the craft.
Scared it makes everyone the same.
The fear is real. The target is wrong.
I did some digging with an LLM into Apple's WWDC talk on the principles of great design. What their own designers admitted changes the whole conversation.
What did Apple say about great design?
They said there is no formula.
No right way. No checklist that produces great work. Their designers described the process as intention, judgment, and restraint. Deciding what to build is mostly deciding what to leave out.
That is not a tool problem. That is a taste problem.
Why can taste not be prompted?
A prompt can describe a style. It can reference a mood. It can generate a thousand options in a minute.
It cannot decide which one is right.
That decision comes from years of looking, choosing, and being wrong. It comes from a point of view. The model has read everything and believes nothing. It has no preference. It has no taste.
You do.
Why are creatives really afraid of AI?
People are not scared the work gets worse. They are scared their skill no longer protects them.
For twenty years the skill was the moat. Learn the tool, master the craft, own the seat. AI collapsed the tool advantage overnight. So the fear feels like a threat to identity.
The tool was never the skill. The judgment was.
What happens to creatives who only learned the tool?
This is the real question.
If your value was speed, AI is faster. If your value was execution, AI executes. If your value was knowing the software, the software now knows itself.
What remains is taste. The ability to look at output and know what is missing. The confidence to cut. The point of view nobody can generate for you.
Apple said it without saying it. There is no formula.
Taste cannot be prompted.
